In Germany more than 500 million metric tons of chemical substances and formulations (compounds) are manufactured and used every year. Before the chemicals and compounds can be used or further processed, they have to be decanted as appropriate, transported and stored.

The necessary handling of chemical substances can be associated with a high risk potential for people and the environment. If the substances are released, the environmental impact can be severe in some cases.
